When electrical energy began to be used in communications, hearing aids started carrying carbon microphones, which are still being used successfully in telephone systems today.

Although their transmission quality was still unsatisfactory, these hearing aids achieved a greater acoustic gain than either ear trumpets or ear tubes.

Their volume could be regulated by supplying more or less current to the microphone.
